Toggle20-30/hpf rbc in urine means that 20-30 red blood cells were found in your urine at 400x magnification, and it’s much more than normal. The presence of this amount of RBCs in urine is rare and can be due to:
· Cancer of the bladder or kidney
· Infection of the bladder, kidney, prostate, or urethra
· Inflammation of the bladder, urethra, prostate, or kidney
· Injury to the bladder or kidney
· Kidney or bladder stones
· post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis, a common cause of blood in the urine in children
· Kidney failure
· Polycystic kidney disease
· Recent urinary tract procedures such as catheterization, circumcision, surgery, or kidney biopsy
If there is no structural problem with your kidneys, urinary tract, prostate, or genitals, your doctor may check to see if you have a bleeding disorder. Causes may include:
· Bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia
· Blood clot in the kidneys
· Blood-thinning medicines, such as aspirin or warfarin
· Sickle cell disease
· Thrombocytopenia (low numbers of platelets) (2)
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause of the blood in the urine and might involve:
– Taking antibiotics
– medication to shrink an enlarged prostate
– having shock wave therapy to break up bladder or kidney stones
If no serious condition is causing your hematuria, no treatment is necessary (3).
* You can enter your urine test results online and get a personalized interpretation, including your condition in each test, definition, reasons for increased or decreased results, dietary and lifestyle recommendations, potential treatments, drug interactions, etc.
HPF stands for the high power field in microscopy and refers to a powered field on a microscope or looking at something when it is the largest, you can make it on the microscope. In fact, each microscope has two types of lenses; the objective, and the eyepiece. The magnification power of the microscope can be calculated by multiplying the magnification power of the eyepiece by the magnification power of the objective lens.
So if an objective lens with a magnification of 10x is used in combination with a 40x magnification eyepiece lens, would project an image of the specimen magnified 400x, abbreviated as HPF (4).
Red Blood Cells (RBC), also known as erythrocytes, carry oxygen around your body and transport carbon dioxide to the lungs, from where it can be exhaled (1). The presence of red blood cells in the urine, which is medically termed hematuria, is not normal and can be a sign of an underlying health issue.
