ToggleA hemoglobin count of 76 means you have anemia, but note that a slightly low hemoglobin count isn’t always a sign of illness; it can be normal for some people. Women with menstrual periods and pregnant women commonly have low Hb counts (5). Otherwise, a hemoglobin count of 76 is dangerous.
If the decrease in the number of your hemoglobin continues and reaches below 50, can be dangerous and have severe consequences. So consult your doctor as soon as possible (6).

Hemoglobin is an oxygen-binding protein found in erythrocytes that transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues and facilitates the return transport of carbon dioxide.
CBC test includes the measurement of hemoglobin levels in the blood. Normal hemoglobin concentrations are approximately 140 to 175 grams per liter in men and 123 to 153 grams per liter in women (1,2). This range varies in children, according to age and sex:
· 6 months to <2 years 110 to 135 (g/L)
· 2-6 years 110 to 137
· 6-12 years 112 to 145
· 12 to <18 years:
Female 114 to 147
Low results
If your hemoglobin level is lower than normal, you have anemia. There are many forms of anemia, each with different causes, which can include:
– Iron deficiency
– Vitamin B-12 deficiency
– Folate deficiency
– Bleeding
– Cancers that affect the bone marrow, such as leukemia
– Kidney disease
– Liver disease
– Hypothyroidism
– Thalassemia — is a genetic disorder that causes low levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells (4)
