However, an abnormally elevated and rising ALP during pregnancy may be dangerous. Side effects of high alkaline phosphatase during pregnancy include placental dysfunction, HELLP syndrome, intrahepatic cholestasis, and malignancy (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18304940\/\">5<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In cases with severe and abnormal increased alkaline phosphatase, more frequent monitoring may be indicated.<\/p>\n<h2 data-pm-slice=\"0 0 []\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"alkaline_phosphatase\"><\/span><strong>alkaline phosphatase<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Alkaline phosphatase (ALP)\u00a0is an enzyme found throughout your\u00a0body, mainly in your liver, bone, kidney, and digestive tract. ALP tests measure the level of mentioned enzyme in your blood that comes from your liver and bones and this enzyme is one of the comprehensive metabolic panel tests (<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/22029-alkaline-phosphatase-alp\">1<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content.aspx?contenttypeid=167&amp;contentid=alkaline_phosphatase\">2<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Normal range<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The normal range of ALP varies from person to person and depends on your age, blood type, gender, and whether you\u2019re pregnant. One common reference range is from 44 to 147 international units per liter (IU\/L), but it\u2019s important to check your test result report to see what your specific lab\u2019s reference range is (<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diagnostics\/22029-alkaline-phosphatase-alp\">3<\/a>).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_do_the_results_mean\"><\/span><strong>What do the results mean?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>High alkaline phosphatase levels<\/strong>\u00a0may be a sign of a liver problem or a bone disorder.
